ROUTE 1 CORRIDOR ECONOMIC REVITALIZATION STRATEGY

This Economic Revitalization Strategy for Route 1 in the Town of Bel Air highlights a vision for transforming the Route 1 Corridor into a pedestrian-friendly mixed use urban street. It provides guidance only and a direction for implementation. It is a starting point. Although, there are some detailed recommendations, this document is a work-in-process that gives the Town’s officials, business and land owners, and residents a concept for what could occur. How this vision is accomplished will unfold over time through public and private investment, partnerships and individual endeavors.  To view this project, please view the Route 1 Corridor Economic Revitalization Strategy.

MAIN STREET IMPROVEMENT PROJECT STUDY

The Main Street Improvement Project Study is now available online in multiple formats available for download.

MAIN STREET IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

The Town is working closely with the State Highway Administration (SHA) on development of streetscape design plans for Main Street between Baltimore Pike and Maulsby Avenue. Plans include reconstruction of the road, sidewalks, replacement of storm drains, water lines, sewer rehabilitation, lighting and landscaping, as well as improvements to the street's appearance and accessibility. The Sate is using a design/build format for this project, which places final design, as well as construction responsibility, on the contractor winning the bid award. The SHA will provide design drawings that are 30% complete, along with specifications and parameters agreed upon between the Town and the State to potential bidders during the bid reiew process scheduled for the spring of 2005. Actual construction will begin in late fall of 2005.

Town and State representatives met with property owners and interested individuals several times during the initial planning of this project. Resprestatives also held several meetings with 14-member Main Street Task Force throughout the design phase. This Task Force is made up of community representatives appointed by the Town Board. The next Main Street Task Force meeting will be scheduled in April. This meeting will help finalize criteria - constraints/opportunities - to be included in the final bid package. The meeting is intended to provide the Task Force an opportunity to present comments and concerns. Dates and times for these meetings will be provided on this website as they are scheduled.

For more information, you may contact the Planning office at 410-638-4540.
